This is the twentieth anniversary BA Fine Art graduation exhibition. This year’s Degree Show is the first to be completed with our new validating partners Chester University. The past twenty years represents a fantastic legacy of creativity and dynamic art making. The students and the programme team are proud of this history and hope visitors will see the how this exhibition contributes to that past whilst looking forward to a vibrant future.
The challenge our students face is to continually define and evaluate their practice through three, or sometimes six, years of study. This makes great demands on them and the families and friends that support them. The Degree Show is the culmination of this study and a celebration of this effort. During times of economic hardship the value of the art and culture is always a key political issue. Museums, galleries and artists are sometimes regarded as a luxury. However creativity and innovation are central to any thriving economy. We hope our students will contribute to this culture of creativity and to the wider community in general. This year's exhibition demonstrates the continuing commitment Wirral Metropolitan BA Fine Art students make to establishing their practice. In the exhibition social and political themes are explored alongside more purely visual and poetic responses to the world around us.
The range of media and approaches to making art is an identifiable strength of the programme and reflects our key aim of providing a broad based Fine Art course that promotes personal and professional development. We are confident that each of this year's graduates is in a position to embrace the challenges of professional practice and to take their practice forward in future years.
As always we would like to thank Colin Simpson and the gallery staff for their continuing support.
